Mariela Adams
Regional Coordinator

Mariela Adams serves as the Regional Coordinator for the Hudson Valley office of Parent to Parent of New York State, which includes Orange, Rockland, Sullivan and Westchester counties. Mariela has been involved in the special needs community since 2005 when her son Luis was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 18 months. Prior to becoming the parent of a child with Autism, Mariela had a professional career in the field of Organizational Development where she helped companies understand and maximize their organizational culture and values.

As a mom of a child with Autism, Mariela has sought to create an educational environment for her son that promotes growth and independence while also taking into account quality of life for her family. Mariela and her family undertook the challenge of homeschooling Luis for several years. This experience profoundly impacted her understanding of quality of life issues and the need to support caregivers. Mariela understands all too well what is like to be completely out of caregiver’s batteries and the resources that can make a difference in a family’s ability to fully enjoy life.

Over the last 10 years Mariela has sought to foster supportive relationships with other families to enhance their ability to make decisions and to understand how each individual member of the family is taking time to grow and develop their own goals. She has also been invited to present in different organizations about the complexities involved in the parent-teacher relationship and how to develop a more collaborative approach between these two key players.

Mariela is passionate about finding ways to support caregivers, not only by helping them access much needed respite, but also by helping families become more effective advocates for their children and families. Mariela sees Parent to Parent as a place that marries both her personal passion to help families and her professional goals. On a personal level, Mariela has benefited tremendously from the support of other parents in her situation and knows first hand the importance of programs like parent matching.

Mariela is thrilled to be part of Parent to Parent NYS and is eager to help parents in her region in as many ways as she can. Mariela lives in Westchester County with her husband Tom, her son Luis and his service dog Nikita. Mariela also has a 16 year old son, Santiago who is away at boarding school.
