Elizabeth Smithmeyer joined the Board of Directors in 2014. She is a retired teacher who has continued her work with people with developmental disabilities, their families, and those who teach and work with them. As a family member of two children with developmental disabilities, Liz respects the important service Parent to Parent provides in supporting families, as well as their ongoing work in information and advocacy.
Liz began working with children and teens with special needs fifty years ago. In that time, she has seen the growth of not only school and community programs but also the understanding that access to education and services is a right protected by laws and regulations. She knows that challenges continue to arise for individuals with disabilities and their families through the lifespan, and that there need to be systems and procedures in place to provide ongoing support which is useful and accessible.
Liz has served on both education and community boards in the Southern Tier area. She lives in Binghamton, NY.
