iCan Shine Bike Camp will be held from June 26 through 30 at Buffalo Niagara Court Center (BNCC) for 75 minutes daily. The camp uses adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and trained staff to enable individuals with disabilities to learn to ride at two-wheel bicycle. Riders attend one 75 minute session each day for five consecutive days where they learn to ride while accompanied and encouraged by volunteer "spotters". Over the course of the week bikes are adjusted in an effort to challenge riders appropriately as they gradually discover the skill and joy of riding.

Parent Network of Western New York presents the workshop Bullying and Students with Disabilities on Friday, June 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. How do students with disabilities cope with bullying? Participants will learn advocacy skills and how supports and services can be built into an Individualized Education Program (IEP) to promote social growth.

Participants will learn the steps in the special education process and learn what to expect at meetings of the Committee on Special Education (CSE) or the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE). Families will learn to be an active part of the process and walk away with resources for the future.

Buffalo State College presents Access BSC - Bridge to Success in College: Summer Transition for Students with Learning Differences Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Access BSC is a week long program aimed at helping pre-collegiate students with learning differences strengthen the skills needed to easily transition from high school to college.

Access BSC will help students learn to talk about their disability and their needs. The goal is for students to feel comfortable speaking up and asking for help in college.

Students will learn how to use technology as a strategy to address issues with: 

  • Time Management
  • Executive Functioning
  • Note taking
  • Mentoring
  • And more...

Students must be at least a sophomore in High School. Parent or guardian permission is required. Sessions will be held at Buffalo State College. Transportation will not be provided. Applications are due by April 1, 2017.

Parent Network of Western New York presents the workshop Effective Communication - For Parents on Tuesday, July 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. Helping families and professionals work together: participants will learn how to improve communication skills to effectively work with professionals who work with children who have a learning challenge or disability. This workshop will help participants learn how to work together to help their child be successful (geared towards parents).
