Parent Network of Western NY presents the webinar Behavioral Interventions: An Attorney's Perspective on Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 12 to 1 p.m. Sometimes a child's behaviors interfere with learning. Students and teachers need strategies to minimize those behaviors and to maximize learning opportunities. Learn when a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) should be developed and how to request a BIP. Patrick McNelis will discuss what information must be included in a BIP, tools and strategies to support student success, and what types of supports and services might be needed.

Parent Network of Western NY presents the workshop Special Education Mediation on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This six-hour workshop will teach participants what mediation is, how it works, and key principles and strategies to help achieve a successful resolution. Through hands-on exercises, videos and life-like role plays, participants will learn to effectively negotiate and take advantage of what mediation has to offer.

Parent to Parent of Western NY presents the four-week workshop series The Nurtured Heart Approach Part 1 on Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. NHA is an approach to life that creates a shift in how we relate to the problems that have been causing challenges. Frustrated by behavior challenges that put the child in control of the home? Have discipline methods stopped working? The Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA) is a language based approach that can help parents regain focus and power and rebuild the love wanted in the home.

   

Participants will learn how to hold clear limits and consequences while building positive connections. The difference in the home will be immediately felt, and in time the family will learn to flourish.

Parent to Parent of Western NY presents the workshop Making Sense of School Discipline and Suspension Part 1 on Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This workshop will be presented by Judith Gerber, an attorney with the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo specializing in education advocacy and policy initiatives.

   

This three part workshop series will focus on the codes of conduct schools use, school discipline policies and practices, and how students with disabilities fit into this scheme. This series will help parents understand the suspension process, student rights, and strategies to address the needs of children subject to school discipline.

Autism Services, Inc. presents the fall workshop Mental Health and ASD: Bridging the Gap on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 8:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The workshop will feature Dr. Michael Cummings, MD who has over 15 years treating children, adolescents, and adults for all major psychiatric conditions and developmental challenges in a wide array of community and institutional settings. This workshop will provide an overview of mental health issues that co-occur in those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Dr. Cummings will discuss a variety of mental health disorders, including, (but not limited to) ADHD, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Bipolar Disorder, and Mood Disorders. Differential diagnosis is used to help determine if the issues presented by the individual are attributed to their diagnosis of autism or if a possible mental health issue exists. Dr. Cummings will also explore the role of commonly used psychiatric medications, as well as their pros and cons to the individual.
