Arc Herkimer presents the workshop Celebrate Calm: Ten Ways to Stop Defiance, Disrespect, and Yelling with two presentations, Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mt. Markham Central Schools and Wednesday, Oct. 4 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Central Valley Schools. Celebrate Calm founder Kirk Martin's presentation will offer concrete, practical strategies to stop yelling, defiance, and power struggles. Learn strategies to:

  • Get kids to listen the first time
  • Stop defiance, disrespect, and yelling
  • Get kids off video games/screens without a fight
  • Create stress-free mornings, homework time and bedtime

Exceptional Family Resources presents the workshop CSE Overview on Thursday, Oct. 5 from 12 to 2 p.m. The Committee on Special Education (CSE) is responsible for developing a child's Individualized Education Program (IEP) through a process involving the student and parents. This workshop will explain the purpose of the CSE, the required members,a nd the parents' role on the committee. Participants will learn strategies for effective advocacy with the CSE.

Arc Herkimer presents the two day workshop Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) Level 1 on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 19 and 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This two-day training was developed by Andy Bondy, Ph.D. and Lori Frost, M.S. CCC/SLP and will be presented by Pyramid Education Consultants for professionals and families on a language training package that is used to teach communication skills to rapidly to those with Autism and limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals on the Autism Spectrum. For more information on PECS click here

   

This workshop will offer a free scholarship for individuals on the Autism Spectrum, family members/caregivers or will cost $200 per person for professionals, educators or CEU credits. Family member or caregiver is defined as a direct relative or caregiver to an individual with a diagnosed intellectual or developmental disability.

Arc Herkimer presents the workshop Evidence Based Strategies for Working with Individuals on the Autism Spectrum on Friday, Nov. 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Herkimer College. Board certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral and President/CEO of JB Autism Consulting, James Ball, Ed.D., BCBA-D will discuss systematic techniques for working with individuals on the spectrum. He will focus on teaching specific skills, enhancing motivation, and generalization training. A step-by-step demonstration will be presented using real life examples. Modifications will be explored that allow this particular program to be effective with individuals significantly challenged with autism, as well as those with Asperger Syndrome. A question and answer period will be provided.

   

Participants will be able to identify:

  • Three reinforcement techniques
  • Implement three specific teaching techniques
  • Design an Individualized Teaching Program
