The Health Foundation for Western and Central New York has awarded researchers from the University of Georgia, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Rochester are collaborating on a research study to better understand caregivers' experiences with respite. Caregivers who reside in one of 16 western or central counties will be interviewed via telephone between January and April 2019. Between 80 to 85 caregivers will be selected to participate in focus groups at the 2019 ARCH National Lifespan Respite Conference in Buffalo April 30 to May 2. Participants will be mailed a $100 gift card at the completion of their interviews.

   

The target population is family adult caregivers of older adults who have physical, intellectual, or cognitive disabilities, and are consumers of respite services. Caregivers must be 18 years or older and have been caregiving for at least 3 months.

Office for People With Developmental Disabilities presents Front Door Family Information Sessions which offer participants an understanding of OPWDD's mission and purpose; the process to become eligible for OPWDD supports services; types of supports and services available; and where individuals and families can go to get assistance. Families/Individuals are welcome to attend any session that is convenient for them. Families are only required to attend one session even if there are multiple people in the family to be represented.

Syracuse University Parent Assistance Center (SUPAC) presents the workshop Baldwinsville Series Session 4: Understanding the Individualized Education Program (IEP) on Wednesday, March 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The IEP is the cornerstone of the Special Education process. "Understanding the IEP" walks families through the New York State standard IEP form and helps them to understand the various components of the IEP, how it impacts their child's education program, who writes the IEP, and what individualized means. "Understanding the IEP" will also provide families with tips and tools to participate in the IEP development process to help promote positive education outcomes.

Syracuse University Parent Assistance Center (SUPAC) presents the workshop Moving On: Transitioning Families from CPSE to CSE on Wednesday, Mar. 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The transition from preschool to elementary school can be a time of excitement and anxiety. Having a better understanding of the process can make the transition easier. This workshop will help the participant:

  • Understand the transition process
  • Learn how to be an active member of the transition team
  • Understand the difference between CPSE and CSE
  • Understand the components of an IEP
  • Strategize ways to introduce new providers to your child
  • Prepare for your child's new school and programming

YOUTH POWER!s AMPLIFY-NY Initiative is hosting regional Youth Leadership Forums (YLFs) designed for young people ages 14-24 to speak up, build leadership and self-advocacy skills and prepare to take on leadership roles. Through large and small group sessions, YLFs are presented in a fun, interactive, and educational format with the support of peers along the way. Learn from guest speakers and panel presentations, participate in structured activities to practice leadership skills, and be connected with resources that meet the goals and advocacy activities that interest you.

   

In order to participate in this unique, free, 4-day, 3 night event, May 18-21, youth must be age 14-24, live in NYS, and share about their leadership potential in the application. If accepted, meals and housing are provided and transportation assistance is available.

   

Parents & Caregivers: Foundations for Leadership will take place Saturday, May 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, May 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
