Arc Herkimer presents the workshop Transition Planning on Wednesday, Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Post-secondary transition is planning and preparing for one's future and after high school while still in school. In this workshop, participants will learn about the transition process for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Participants will also learn the answers to the following questions and more:

  • What does Post-Secondary Transition mean?
  • When should planning begin for transition from school to the adult world?
  • Who is involved in the transition process?
  • What does transition planning look like in the IEP?

This training is open to all families who want to learn about transition planning for students with IEPs and is highly recommended for families of students in middle school and high school.

Exceptional Family Resources presents the workshop Effective Communication and Advocacy Steps on Thursday, Dec. 7 from noon to 2 p.m. Do you come away from meetings not saying what you intended or feeling as though your viewpoint is misunderstood? Do you listen to what other team members say? How do you respond? Communication is key to effective partnerships. Learn to recognize the barriers in communication that can get in the way of collaboration and positive outcomes. Strengthen your advocacy skills by learning effective and collaborative communication strategies. Identify barriers to effective communication. Learn techniques to remove barriers. Learn elements for effective teamwork and positive interactions. This workshop will be presented by Kara Georgi, Parent Education Specialist with Starbridge.

Sensory-Friendly Production of The Wizard of Oz

Syracuse Stage will be presenting a Sensory Friendly performance of The Wizard of Oz on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include a 100% refund right up to the start of the show. Special accommodations in this performance include:

  • Lower sound levels, especially for loud or startling noises
  • Reduced stage lighting
  • Increased lighting in the theater to allow easier movement if necessary
  • Preparatory materials provided to parents and children before the show so families know what to expect from the box office to the seats to what costumes may be seen
  • Use of iPads or smart phones if being used as a child's communication devise
  • Designated rooms outside the theatre for those who may be overwhelmed and need a minute to self-regulate
  • Special trained ushers, staff and volunteers

Syracuse University Parent Assistance Center (SUPAC) and Mid-State and Central Regional Special Educational Technical Assistance Support Centers (RSE-TASC) presents the workshop CPSE/CSE Parent Member Training on Thursday, Jan. 25 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This training is designed to certify individuals to become a CPSE/CSE Parent Member while ensuring that all members of the CPSE/CSE team work together effectively. Participants will learn the steps of the special education process, basic vocabulary, laws and regulations pertaining to students with disabilities and understand a child's special education rights.
