Eden II Programs Diagnostic and Outreach Center presents the webinar Using Incidental Teaching to Increase Speech-Language and Communication Skills in Individuals with ASD on Monday, Aug. 6 from 12 to 1 p.m. or 2 to 3 p.m. Incidental teaching is used to get elaborated language by waiting for a person to initiate conversation about a topic and then responding in ways that ask for more information. It can be difficult for clinicians to implement with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) due to their low rates of initiations and limited interests.

This presentaiton will focus on the procedural components of incidental teaching necessary for clinicians to implement in order to elicit initial initiations followed by elaborated responses from individuals with ASD. Various forms of initiating along with specific strategies will be discussed. The benefits of using incidental teaching along with a comparison with discrete trial instruction will be described. The use of scripts when incorporating incidental teaching will also be addressed. Critical issues to consider such as each student's individual capabilities and specific motivations will be emphasized.
