NY Deaf Blind Collaborative (NYDBC) Family Learning presents the training, Part 1: Understanding Your Child's IEP on Sunday, Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Join to explore the intention of the Individualized Education Program (IEP). The training will address the following:

  • Long-term goals and short term objectives
  • Present levels of performance and appropriate evaluation
  • Accommodations and management needs

Each participant is expected to bring a copy of their child's IEP for discussion and reflection. Coffee and light breakfast items will be provided. Lunch is on your own. Parent to Parent runs two informal monthly support groups for parents navigating their child’s special needs.

Group A is for parents of children up to 16 years old

Group B is for parents of children aged 16 through adulthood

Both groups take place at the time and place listed above.

GROUPS WILL BE CAPPED AT 20 PARTICIPANTS EACH.

Parent to Parent of NYS presents a Parent Group meeting on Monday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Parent to Parent runs two informal monthly support groups for parents navigating their child's special needs. Group A is for parents of children up to 16 years-old and Group B is for parents aged 16 through adulthood. Both groups take place at the same time.

   

Groups are capped at 20 participants each. RSVP is required by Sept. 20 by emailing Alissa Morris at amorris@ptopnys.org.

Autism-friendly performance of Disney’s The Lion King

TDF presents an Autism-friendly performance of Disney's The Lion King on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. This is a special performance for individuals on the Autism spectrum, as well as people with other developmental or cognitive disabilities who may benefit, not for the general public.

The running time for this play is two hours and thirty minutes including one fifteen minute intermission.

Warnings:

  • At the beginning of the show and at the beginning of the second act there is a large procession through the orchestra in the aisles. Please note this when choosing seat locations.
  • There are potentially scary moments in the first act with an on stage stampede and Mufasa falling from a cliff.
  • There are ramps at the edge of the stage. Please note this if you are accompanying an individual prone to running.
  • The fundraiser Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction will be taking place on the day of this performance. This event produces large crowds and will cause congestion in the area of the Minskoff Theatre.

Ticket prices range from $50 to $79. Tickets will go on sale beginning at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 15. (enter password SIMBATDF). Click here for more information.

The Autism Community Walk & Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, Oct. 20, rain or shine at Belmont Lake State Park. All revenues raised are shared with participating non profits. Free booths are available for small nonprofit groups at the resource fair during the walk.
