Police Athletic League, Special PAL presents Free Mornings of Sports and Games for Children with Special Needs for children ages 5 to 12. This program is designed to encourage children with Special Needs and their families to play various sporting games in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The gym is set up into stations and children can play basketball, scooters, hockey, bowling, hippity-hop balls and parachute games. For children who want to play at their own pace, a quite space for puzzles, play-dough, coloring, LEGOS will be available. Student volunteers are paired with children and play along with them.

Supporting Our Youth and Adults Network (SOYAN) will be visiting the North Shore on Tuesdays, January 8, February 5, and March 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. This community program provides support, education, and community information to families navigating Self-Direction. Topics will be determined by group participation.

   

SOYAN Advocacy Working Group meetings will take place on Tuesdays, January 15, February 12, and March 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. Advocacy Working Group addresses policy and regulations pertaining to sustainability and longevity of Self-Direction (OPWDD).

   

SOYAN Community Program meetings will take place on Tuesdays, January 19, February 26, and March 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. The Community Program provides support and community information, and is open to all. Topics will be determined by the group participation.

International Dyslexia Associaiton-Long Island Branch and Half Hollow Hills Special Education Parent Teacher Association presents Wrightslaw Advocacy Training Special Education Law and A Child's Rights with Peter Wright, Esq. on Friday, Jan. 25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This full day workshop will feature breakout sessions on topics related to:

  • Special Educaiton Law
  • Rights and Responsibilities
  • Introduction to Tactics and Strategies for Effective Advocacy
  • Tests and Assessments to Measure Progress and Regression
  • SMART Individual Education Plans IEP's

Participants will learn their rights, acquire collaborative strategies and navigate complexities of IEP's and 504 Plans.

   

The conference fee is $225 per individual or $200 per groups of three or more. The conference fee includes breakfast, lunch, and three Wrightslaw books: Special Education Law, From Emotions to Advocacy, and All about IEP's (a total retail value of $63).

Nassau County Police Activity League's (NCPAL) Special Needs Unit presents a Seal Watching Tour on Sunday, Jan. 27 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. The voyage on a vessel of the Captain Lou Fleet will take place in the Hempstead Bay on the South Shore of Long Island. The cost of participation is $40 per pair (participant and chaperone). Families and friends are welcome and the cost would be $20 per person.

Rhythmic Movement Training International presents two training opportunities in Febrary, RMTi One: Focus, Organization and Comprehension on Feb. 4 and 5 or RMTi Two: Emotions, Memory & Behavior. RMT courses involve using movements and various reflex integration techniques for optimal neural development. RMT can be used as a stand-alone modality or easily incorporated into being used with other practices and techniques.

Office for People With Developmental Disabilities presents Front Door Family Information Sessions which offer participants an understanding of OPWDD's mission and purpose; the process to become eligible for OPWDD supports services; types of supports and services available; and where individuals and families can go to get assistance.
