Police Athletic League, Special PAL presents Free Mornings of Sports and Games for Children with Special Needs for children ages 5 to 12. This program is designed to encourage children with Special Needs and their families to play various sporting games in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The gym is set up into stations and children can play basketball, scooters, hockey, bowling, hippity-hop balls and parachute games. For children who want to play at their own pace, a quite space for puzzles, play-dough, coloring, LEGOS will be available. Student volunteers are paired with children and play along with them.

Supporting Our Youth and Adults Network (SOYAN) will be visiting the North Shore on Tuesdays, January 8, February 5, and March 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. This community program provides support, education, and community information to families navigating Self-Direction. Topics will be determined by group participation.

   

SOYAN Advocacy Working Group meetings will take place on Tuesdays, January 15, February 12, and March 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. Advocacy Working Group addresses policy and regulations pertaining to sustainability and longevity of Self-Direction (OPWDD).

   

SOYAN Community Program meetings will take place on Tuesdays, January 19, February 26, and March 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. The Community Program provides support and community information, and is open to all. Topics will be determined by the group participation.

Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism (NSSA) is offering an eight-week workshop series for parents and family members of children affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The workshop will provide answers and critical information on:

  • What is ASD and how does it affect a child... and a family?
  • What are the benefits of parent training - why do parents need to learn how to teach?
  • What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and why does my child and family need it? - basic principles of ABA and how they can help in managing daily life
  • Incidental teaching - seizing and creating learning opportunities throughout your day-to-day lives and activities
  • Basic Problem Solving - how did we get here and what can we do to change and fix it?
  • Siblings, schedules, and normal day to day chaos
  • Common mistakes - how mixed messages and inconsistencies actually feed the very problems you are looking to solve

This training will be offered on Thursdays for eight sessions beginning on Feb. 28. Those who register are asked to commit to the entire eight weeks. Attendance by both parents is strongly recommended. Please note that this workshop is only being offered to parents and family members of children affected by ASD.

   

The cost for this eight-week workshop is $100. To register call 631-462-0386, register early as there are limited seats available.

Parent to Parent of NYS presents a Parent Group on Monday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Parent to Parent runs two informal monthly support groups for parents navigating their child's special needs. Group A is for parents of children up to 16 years old. Group B is for parents of children aged 16 through adulthood.

   

Groups will be capped at 20 participants each. Registration is required, register with Alissa Morris at amorris@ptopnys.org, please indicate which group you will be attending.

Specialized Autism Support & Information (SASI)'s Autism Conference will take place on Saturday, Mar. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The conference will feature multiple presentations (see flyer below) as well as free 15 minute IEP readings in the resource area. During the conference the following workshops will be held: featuring Smart IDEA Group, Advocates:

  • Reading an IEP and Everything You Didn't Know was on an IEP (10-10:30 a.m. and 1-1:30 p.m.)
  • Jennifer Keisner, Self-Direction Broker: The Ins and Outs of OPWDD and Self Direction (10:45-11:15 a.m. and 1:45-2:15 p.m.)
  • Maria Licata, Advocate: Advocating For Your Child, CSE Tips and More (11:30 a.m. - 12 p.m., 2:30-3 p.m.)
  • Achieve Beyond: Behavioral Therapy, The Role of ABA and It's Effectiveness in Helping Children (12:15-12:45 and 3:15-3:45 p.m.)
