Recreation   RUBIES: Special Needs Cheer

Core Athletix Rubies is in their 2nd season as a special needs cheer team. This team is comprised of athletes ages 5 and above (up to and including adults) of varying abilities. We accept children of all disabilities and levels of functioning.

The team practices 1 time per week for 1 hour sessions running from June-May.

During practices our Rubies work on fine and gross motor skills, self-esteem, team interactions and language skills through activities aimed at developing a comprehensive cheer routine. The team learns the same routine sections as the competitive cheer teams do: jumps, motions, dance, stunts, pyramid and yes, tumbling. The routine is tailored to the abilities of each individual athlete so that all athletes can participate to the full extent of their abilities.

Each athlete is assigned a ‘buddy’ athlete from within our competitive cheer program to help them learn the routine and improve their skills.  Rubies perform their routine at local during the course of the season.  Typical travel includes Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.

The Rubies team is coached by a USASF (United States All-star Federation) certified coach along with several junior coaches and a consultant regarding special needs limitations and constraints.

Practices are Sundays from 1-2 p.m. at the Core Athletix facility located at 1344 University Avenue.

The program is free to participants.  Coaches donate their time and expenses are currently covered by generous donations of local businesses and all-star members of Core Athletix.  If you are interested in donating to Rubies, please feel free to contact the Core Athletix office for further information.

On behalf of myself and the Core Athletix staff and community, we welcome athletes to come to a practice at no cost to determine if this program fits their needs. For more information please call the Core Athletix office at 585-244-2496.
