Starbridge presents the workshop Pro-Social Behaviors on Wednesday, Sept. 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Teaching youth who have disabilities about sexuality is important in promoting independence, personal safety, healthy lifestyles, healthy relationships, and social inclusion. Families, guardians and professionals will leave this workshop with the information and confidence they need to address the topic of sexuality with children, teens, or young adults who have disabilities.

Starbridge presents the conference Show Me The Way Home on Friday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This full-day conference will focus on a person-centered approach to creating housing for people who have intellectual or developmental disabilities. A good housing plan must be rooted in the individual's personal goals, address their needs, and identify and optimize their personal resources and public funding. We follow the paths of two individuals seeking to live independently.

   

The morning session will be presented by Christopher Liuzzo; the afternoon session will be presented by John Maltby with special guest James Traylor. Join for the morning session, afternoon session, or full day conference.

The New York Deaf-Blind Collaborative presents Supporting Children & Youth with Multiple Disabilities & Deaf-Blindness: Communication, Recreation, Transition & Long-Term Planning on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Join to explore along with leading experts some critical topics for learners with multiple disabilities and hearing/vision loss. Topics will include:

  • Vision & the brain
  • Community recreation panel
  • Communication & tactile strategies
  • Transition planning (early childhood and young adult transitions)
  • Long-term planning panel

   

Those who attend this session include parents of children with hearing and vision loss and other challenges, professionals providing services to children with sensory loss and multiple disabilities.

Starbridge presents the workshop series Creating a Life after High School Series on Thursdays, Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Nov. 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This five series exploration is designed to help answer questions students and family member have as students enter the adult world, such as:

  • Where will I live?
  • What are the opportunities for learning?
  • Where will I work?
  • What will I do for fun?
  • What agencies can help to provide support?

   

Individuality of each student is valued and encouraged throughout the sessions. At the end of this program, participants will apply for funds that are used to support their future vision. Participants must attend all sessions to be eligible to receive payment.

   

Registration is open to all students in Monroe County for ages 15 to 21, who are living at home and who have established DDRO eligibility. A family member, guardian or family friend must accompany the student to all sessions. Registration is required by Friday, Sept. 29. Starbridge presents the workshop Social Communication Disorder: What is it? on Monday, Oct. 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. There are subtle, yet significant differences between Social Skills Deficits and Social Communication Disorder, a common disorder for students who have Tourette, ADD, sensory processing delays, and executive functioning difficulties. This may also impact students diagnosed with high functioning autism and Asperger's. Presenters will share how each is diagnosed and the differences between the two. Participants will gain the knowledge and resources needed to support the development of an appropriate intervention plan for children.

   

This workshop will be presented by Pamela Malley, MA, CCC-SLP Speech-Language Pathologist, Member of Tourette Association.

Carol is best know for the development of Social Stories, a well-respected evidence-based practice used worldwide with people with of all ages.

Family Support Services Advisory Council presents the information session Surrounding Yourself with Support on Friday, Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. This information session is for those with a family member with a developmental disability living at home that exhibits challenging behavior. This free event will be presented by Mike Kephart from Ontario ARC and Nick Ziemann and Maureen Chaffer from Mary Cariola Children's Center. Participants will understand how stress shapes behavior, learn techniques for stress reduction, learn practical strategies to manage a child's behavior and explore ways to ensure safety in their environment.
