The Family Group in conjunction with The Center for Disability Services presents Funding Your Family's Future Informational Series - Ablenow on Wednesday, Mar. 20 from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. This informal session on ABLEnow accounts, these 529 tax plan help individuals with disabilities save money to pay for qualified expenses, without being taxed on the earnings, and in most cases, without losing eligibility for certain means-tested benefit programs.

   

Contributions from family and friends made directly into ABLEnow account are not considered income to, or assets of, the individual with a disability when determining eligibility for certain disability programs. This means that family and friends can provide financial assistance without endangering eligibility for benefits critical to the health and well-being of many with disabilities.

Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center presents World Down Syndrome Day - Random Acts of Kindness Campaign on March 21. To honor and celebrate individuals with Down Syndrome and spread a little love and kindness in the name of Down Syndrome. Pre-printed Random Acts of Kindness postcards are available at the DSAHRC office.

1: On March 21st (or around that day), wear a t-shirt that says something about Down syndrome.

2: Choose and act of kindness. Click here for suggestions

3: Pick up Printed World Down Syndrome Day postcards located at the DSAHRC office at 22 Corporate Woods Blvd., 5th Floor, Albany, NY 12211. Share the postcard with the recipient of your Random Act of Kindness. Click here to print your own Random Act of Kindness Postcard.

4: Take pictures of the random acts of kindness and post on your social media pages with the hashtag #WSD19, and if you wish email them to info@dsahrc.org to be posted on Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center's Facebook page.

Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center presents Children's Parent Group Meeting on Thursday, March 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nancy Hampton and Kathleen Pincher, Early Childhood Specialists at the Early Childhood Direction Center will lead a children's book activity. Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, cake and light refreshments will be served.

   

This event is open to children, parents, caregivers, service providers and other professionals who are interested. Parent to Parent of NYS's Weekend Family Empowerment Advocacy Series is accepting applications from parents, grandparents and guardians of individuals with disabilities for the Spring Family Empowerment Series. This series prepares participants to better advocate within the education system for their own children as a volunteer to assist other families. The training includes information about the special education process: the laws, regulations, and policies related to students with disabilities. The training aims to improve communication and develop effective advocacy skills.

Participants are selected through an application process and must reside in one of the following counties: Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Freene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schnectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington. There are no fees, however participants are expected to attend all training sessions in person and meet the requirements listed in the attached flyer below.

The Family Empowerment Advocacy Series will be two mandatory in-person sessions held on a Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 13 and May 18. Some sessions will require minimal homework. Training sessions will take place at Capital District DDSO. Plan to bring a lunch.

The Sages Colleges Esteves School of Education and The School of Health Sciences presents A Recreational and Sensory Based Community Event on Saturday, April 20 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Structured based activities that help promote positive play, peer interactions, and exploratory learning for individuals in grades K-12 with developmental disabilities, their siblings and peers.

   

This event provides participants with the option to pick 4 different 20 minute activities, that range in recreation, arts, music and movement, content specific, and so much more. Groups are limited to 7 participants with at least two instructors. Instructors are graduate and undergraduate students, whose activities have been approved by college faculty. Professors are also present.

STRIDE Adaptive Sports Bike Camp 2019 will take place June 24-28. Registration is available online, spots are limited and will be provided to individuals that meet all the requirements and have paid on a first come first serve basis. Preference will be given to first time participants. Participants must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age - 8 years-old
  • Able to sidestep to both sides
  • Have a disability
  • Able to attend camp all five days
  • Able to walk without assistive device
  • Maximum weight 220 lbs
  • Willing and able to wear a properly fitted bike helmet
  • Minimum inseam of 20" (measure from floor while rider is wearing sneakers)
