Hi-5 Sports presents Basketball Season beginning in December. Hi-5 Sports strives to provide an environment which allows people with special needs to build self-esteem, confidence, and friendships through sports by providing opportunities to socialize, compete and exercise both their motor and life skills.

Basketball is offered for three skill levels including Beginners, Intermediates and Advanced.

Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital, St. Peter's Health Partners presents The 2018 Summer Adaptive Recreation Experiences will take place over 5 days during the summer. Each date is as follows:

  1. Adaptive Fishing $10: Friday, June 15 from 9:30 a.m. to Noon at Six Mile Waterworks at Rensselaer Lake, Albany. This is a catch and release only event, no fishing license required. Registration deadline is Friday, June 1.
  2. Adaptive Rowing $10: Sunday, June 24 with the time TBD for two hours at Saratoga Lake, Saratoga Springs. Learn the basics of rowing and then put them to practice on the water Visit saratogarowing.com for information. Registration deadline is Friday, June 1.
  3. Adaptive Golf $15: Tuesday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Van Patten Golf Club, Clifton park. Professionals and therapists will be available to assist with adaptive techniques and trials in the Paramobile. This program will be followed by lunch.   4. Adaptive Sailing $15: Tuesday, Aug. 7 from noon to 5 p.m. at Camp Chingachgook at Lake George. Engage in a brief on-shore safety straining before trying your hand at sailing or enjoying a boat ride. Lunch will follow the program. for information visit yknotsailing.org. Registration deadline is Friday, July 6.
  5. Adaptive Kayaking $10: Saturday, Aug. 18 with the time TBD, at Saratoga Lake, Saratoga Springs. Learn the basics of kayaking and then put them to practice on the water. For more information visit saratogarowing.com. Registration deadline is Friday, July 20.

Sunnyview's Adaptive Recreation Experiences program provides individuals with the opportunity to return to previously enjoyed activities or to try something new.

Participants are selected through an application process and must reside in one of the following counties: Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, Washington. There are no fees; however, participants are expected to attend all training sessions in person and meet the requirements listed in this letter. Accepted applicants are expected to be willing to educate families residing in their county. Graduates of the program may be asked to assist up to three families over the course of the year. Examples of assistance include: talking to another parent, grandparent or guardian about education advocacy, assisting with problem solving or trouble shooting about their child’s education, or helping a parent, grandparent or guardian learn about special education process. It is not an expectation that graduates attend CSE meetings. Additionally, graduates are asked to participate in occasional surveys and report on your advocacy efforts with other families on a monthly or quarterly basis.

   

The Family Empowerment Advocacy Series will be held in mandatory in-person sessions held on Saturdays July 14 and Aug. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please plan to bring a lunch.

Participants will be selected based on the quality of their application and ability to serve families in areas of need. Selected applicants will receive a confirmation call on Monday, July 9.

Center for Spectrum Services presents Summer Autism Training Institute series will take place during the month of July. There will be two series to choose from; the series in Ellenville will focus on younger students ages 2 through 8 years, while the series in Kingston will focus on older individuals ages 9 and older.

    

The locations and sessions take place as follows:

Ellenville Series: Tuesdays, July 10, 17, 24 and 31 from 4 to 7 p.m. presented by Sandra Brownsey. The series will take place at 4 Yankee Place in Ellenville.

Kingston Series: Wednesdays, July 11, 18, 25 and Aug. 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. presented by Tiffany Francese sears. The series will take place at 70 Kukuk Lane in Kingston.

This in-depth course will impart information in:

  • Understanding the form and function of interfering behaviors and implementing positive behavioral supports
  • Strategies for developing a functional behavioral assessment and intervention plans
  • Creating a therapeutic environment in the classroom, home, or clinical setting
  • Supporting the needs of the individual within the group context

The cost for this workshop series is $260 if received before June 8, or $300 after June 8. Seating is limited and registration is required. Click here for additional information or to register.

Parent to Parent of NYS presents a meeting for Hispanic Parents or Caregivers of children with developmental disabilities and special health care needs on Tuesday, July 12 at 5:15 p.m. The group will discuss the grieving process and how a negative feeling can turn into a positive one when we assume a life perspective based on what is, and not what could be. This will be a Spanish only presentation.

The Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region and the Albany County Sheriff's Office present a Safety Class for Drivers with Autism on Saturday, June 23 at 10 a.m. Driving presents special challenges to members of the Autism community. This comprehensive course has been designed to help drivers of differing abilities to interact with law enforcement. The course will cover traffic stops, tickets, accidents, driving protocol, and real world practice interacting with and officer.
