The Arc of Lexington presents the Autism and Self-Advocacy Workshops: Thrive on the Spectrum - Keys to Unlocking Social Potential and Independence and Speak Up! Take Charge of Your Success on Saturday, April 6 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration takes place from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

   

Thrive on the Autism Spectrum - Keys to Unlocking Social Potential and Independence: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Presenters will share information how to build essential social skills and offer strategies to help them learn to be independent and regulate themselves better at home and in school

   

Speak Up! Take Charge of Your Success: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Learn how to advocate for yourself in college and the workplace. Presenters will discuss how self-discovery and leadership classes build confidence in students with Autism and learning differences who must learn to advocate to secure the support and accommodations they need to be successful.

The suggested audience for this workshop: teens and young adults with ASD, parents, grandparents or professionals who work with kids diagnosed with ASD ages 3 to 25.

Parent to Parent of NYS's Weekend Family Empowerment Advocacy Series is accepting applications from parents, grandparents and guardians of individuals with disabilities for the Spring Family Empowerment Series. This series prepares participants to better advocate within the education system for their own children as a volunteer to assist other families. The training includes information about the special education process: the laws, regulations, and policies related to students with disabilities. The training aims to improve communication and develop effective advocacy skills.

Participants are selected through an application process and must reside in one of the following counties: Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Freene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schnectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington. There are no fees, however participants are expected to attend all training sessions in person and meet the requirements listed in the attached flyer below.

The Family Empowerment Advocacy Series will be two mandatory in-person sessions held on a Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 13 and May 18. Some sessions will require minimal homework. Training sessions will take place at Capital District DDSO. Plan to bring a lunch.

The Sages Colleges Esteves School of Education and The School of Health Sciences presents A Recreational and Sensory Based Community Event on Saturday, April 20 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Structured based activities that help promote positive play, peer interactions, and exploratory learning for individuals in grades K-12 with developmental disabilities, their siblings and peers.

   

This event provides participants with the option to pick 4 different 20 minute activities, that range in recreation, arts, music and movement, content specific, and so much more. Groups are limited to 7 participants with at least two instructors. Instructors are graduate and undergraduate students, whose activities have been approved by college faculty. Professors are also present.

STRIDE Adaptive Sports Bike Camp 2019 will take place June 24-28. Registration is available online, spots are limited and will be provided to individuals that meet all the requirements and have paid on a first come first serve basis. Preference will be given to first time participants. Participants must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age - 8 years-old
  • Able to sidestep to both sides
  • Have a disability
  • Able to attend camp all five days
  • Able to walk without assistive device
  • Maximum weight 220 lbs
  • Willing and able to wear a properly fitted bike helmet
  • Minimum inseam of 20" (measure from floor while rider is wearing sneakers)
