Hi-5 Sports presents Basketball Season beginning in December. Hi-5 Sports strives to provide an environment which allows people with special needs to build self-esteem, confidence, and friendships through sports by providing opportunities to socialize, compete and exercise both their motor and life skills.

Basketball is offered for three skill levels including Beginners, Intermediates and Advanced.

Event: 

Focus Participants needed, self-advocates with a developmental disability and other disabilities, to register to participate with the goal of obtaining ideas and suggestions from individuals on how to prevent abuse across the lifespan and in all settings.

   

The groups are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 14, one at 10 a.m. and end at noon, the second focus group will begin at 1 p.m., ending at 3 p.m.

   

To qualify participants must:

  • Be a self-advocate over the age of 21 with a developmental disability and able to give consent
  • Be able to actively participate in a focus group for two hours independently. Accommodations will be provided upon request at time of registration.
  • Agree to keep all information about others private and confidential

The Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York presents An Afternoon of Play at Ring Around the Spectrum on Sunday, Feb. 24 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Enjoy the end of winter break with a round of fun before school starts again! Join the NextDor Young Families cluster at Ring Aroudn the Spectrum for an afternoon of play. Ring Around is a sensory gym that's suitable for all ages and abilities. Please note that this is not a drop-off event, and parents are welcomed to sit on the couch and hang out while the kids play.

Parent to Parent of NYS and Niskayuna School District's joint PowerPoint presentation Understanding How to Read an IEP will take place on Monday, Feb. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. At the end of the presentation parents and caregivers will be given an opportunity to participate in a Q & A session. This presentation is specifically geared to any parent, caregiver, or student who is in the process of, or currently has, an IEP ages preschool to 21.

The Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York presents a screening of Life, Animated on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. Life, Animate details the story of how Owen found a pathway to language and a framework for making sense of the world through Disney animated films. By evocatively interweaving classic Disney sequences with verité scenes from Owen’s life, the film explores how identification and empathy with characters like Simba, Jafar, and Ariel create a context for him to understand his feelings and interpret reality.

Center for Autism and Related Disorders presents the guest lecture Toward a Better Understanding of Anxiety in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder on Thursday, Mar. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. Anxiety and poor stress management are common among children with ASD. Anxiety may worsen during adolescence, as youth experience increased social demands. This presentation will focus on understanding and assessing anxiety in children with Autism Spectrum disorders, as well as effective strategies for intervention.
