Autism Services of the Finger Lakes at Happiness House presents the workshop Social Stories with Carol Gray on Friday, October 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This conference is for families and professionals featuring Carol Gray, a consultant to children, adolescents, and adults with Autism providing support via workshops and information, referral resources, and direct services for individuals with Autism, their families, and those who work on their behalf.

Carol is best know for the development of Social Stories, a well-respected evidence-based practice used worldwide with people with of all ages.

The cost for this workshop is $85 for parents or $110 for professionals and includes morning continental breakfast, lunch and afternoon dessert/coffee, plus ample free parking.

Special Olympics Bowling League

Crystal Lanes is creating a Special Olympics Bowling League which will begin on Friday, Oct. 20. The league will run for 20 weeks for people with disabilities ages 8 and older. The sessions will run from 3 to 5 p.m. on Fridays through March 2. This league is called the Bandits Training Club and is affiliated with the Genesee Region of the Special Olympics of New York.

   

The coordinator and coach is Tracie Johnson, a service coordinator with AIM. She has been involved with Special Olympics for many years.

   

The cost to participate is $7 per week, which includes two games and bowling shoes. Ramps are available. Ryan Shafer, a PBA Tour bowler from Horseheads will be available in the Crystal Lanes pro shop to help with equipment needs and for tips.

   

Following the season, Bandits bowlers can compete in Special Olympics regional tournaments in the spring.

   

To sign up, email Tracie Johnson at tjohnson14810@hotmail.com. While RSVP's are appreciate, bowlers can also show up on Friday at Crystal Lanes. Participation is flexible and participants don't have to commit to the entire season.

Families/Individuals are welcome to attend any session that is convenient for them. Families are only required to attend one session even if there are multiple people in the family to be represented.

SUPAC and Family Resource Network present the training Handwriting & Technology for Children and Teens with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. Handwriting can be a difficult task, especially for students with developmental disabilities. This course will teach strategies to promote improved handwriting using technology. Technology is motivating for children and it's wonderful if it can be paired with academics. This course is for parents of children of all ages, from preschool to teenagers!

A variety of apps will be demonstrated including:

  • Apps to encourage proper letter formation for preschool aged children
  • Apps to promote handwriting practice and written expression for school aged students
  • Apps for handwriting compensation techniques for secondary students

If possible, bring your devices to practice along with the instructor.

This training is free and the deadline to register is Oct. 20. For parent or provider registration, email register@familyrn.org and include the names of individuals attending, phone number, county of residence and indicate if your loved one has OPWDD eligibility. Cayuga Counseling Services presents the training Redefining Consequences: Considerations and Strategies for Addressing Challenging Behaviors on Friday, October 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This presentation will focus on why some of the most conventional things parents, school staff and providers do in response to challenging behaviors (i.e. lectures, reprimands, moving to red light, send to their room/principal, taking away privileges) fall short for students with developmental disabilities, Autism, and some disruptive behavior disorders.

The presenter, Dr. Meichenbaum will offer ways to help children acquire skill alternatives, learn where to demonstrate the skills and have the motivation to demonstrate them. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

The Clemens Center will hosting a sensory-friendly production of David Parsons Dance Company on Friday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. Admittance is free to those who register to attend, including school groups and others interested in taking part.

   

Sensory-friendly performances incorporate special modifications to accommodate with sensory needs including:

  • Increased lighting in the seating area and house throughout the performance
  • Reduced sound levels
  • No strobe or flashing lights
  • Additional trained staff on hand to provide patrons with assistance when needed
  • Availablility of sound-cancelling headphones
  • Fidget toys
  • Quiet and activity areas

Family Support Services Advisory Council presents the information session Surrounding Yourself with Support on Friday, Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. This information session is for those with a family member with a developmental disability living at home that exhibits challenging behavior. This free event will be presented by Mike Kephart from Ontario ARC and Nick Ziemann and Maureen Chaffer from Mary Cariola Children's Center. Participants will understand how stress shapes behavior, learn techniques for stress reduction, learn practical strategies to manage a child's behavior and explore ways to ensure safety in their environment.
