Arc Herkimer presents the two day workshop Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) Level 1 on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 19 and 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This two-day training was developed by Andy Bondy, Ph.D. and Lori Frost, M.S. CCC/SLP and will be presented by Pyramid Education Consultants for professionals and families on a language training package that is used to teach communication skills to rapidly to those with Autism and limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals on the Autism Spectrum. For more information on PECS click here

   

This workshop will offer a free scholarship for individuals on the Autism Spectrum, family members/caregivers or will cost $200 per person for professionals, educators or CEU credits. Family member or caregiver is defined as a direct relative or caregiver to an individual with a diagnosed intellectual or developmental disability.

Central Early Childhood Direction Center presents the workshop Sensory Integration on Tuesday, Oct. 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sensory integration is the process by which we receive information through our senses, organize this information, and use it to participate in everyday activities. Through this workshop, participants will:

  • Learn more about the sensory integration process
  • Learn what activities can be employed in the classroom and at home to help build sensory integration skills
  • Make a sensory tool to use at home or in the classroom
  • Leave with directions on how to make other sensory tools

   

This workshop is presented by Cori Lesher and is free to attend, but seating is limited. Registration is requested one week prior to the workshop date. SUPAC and Family Resource Network present the training Handwriting & Technology for Children and Teens with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. Handwriting can be a difficult task, especially for students with developmental disabilities. This course will teach strategies to promote improved handwriting using technology. Technology is motivating for children and it's wonderful if it can be paired with academics. This course is for parents of children of all ages, from preschool to teenagers!

   

A variety of apps will be demonstrated including:

  • Apps to encourage proper letter formation for preschool aged children
  • Apps to promote handwriting practice and written expression for school aged students
  • Apps for handwriting compensation techniques for secondary students

   

If possible, bring your devices to practice along with the instructor.

   

This training is free and the deadline to register is Oct. 20. For parent or provider registration, email register@familyrn.org and include the names of individuals attending, phone number, county of residence and indicate if your loved one has OPWDD eligibility. Please put "Technology" in the subject line of your email.

Cayuga Counseling Services presents the training Redefining Consequences: Considerations and Strategies for Addressing Challenging Behaviors on Friday, October 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This presentation will focus on why some of the most conventional things parents, school staff and providers do in response to challenging behaviors (i.e. lectures, reprimands, moving to red light, send to their room/principal, taking away privileges) fall short for students with developmental disabilities, Autism, and some disruptive behavior disorders.

The presenter, Dr. Meichenbaum will offer ways to help children acquire skill alternatives, learn where to demonstrate the skills and have the motivation to demonstrate them. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

Arc Herkimer presents the workshop Evidence Based Strategies for Working with Individuals on the Autism Spectrum on Friday, Nov. 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Herkimer College. Board certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral and President/CEO of JB Autism Consulting, James Ball, Ed.D., BCBA-D will discuss systematic techniques for working with individuals on the spectrum. He will focus on teaching specific skills, enhancing motivation, and generalization training. A step-by-step demonstration will be presented using real life examples. Modifications will be explored that allow this particular program to be effective with individuals significantly challenged with autism, as well as those with Asperger Syndrome. A question and answer period will be provided.

   

Participants will be able to identify:

  • Three reinforcement techniques
  • Implement three specific teaching techniques
  • Design an Individualized Teaching Program

Syracuse University Parent Assistance Center (SUPAC) and Mid-State and Central Regional Special Educational Technical Assistance Support Centers (RSE-TASC) presents the workshop CPSE/CSE Parent Member Training on Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This training is designed to certify individuals to become a CPSE/CSE Parent Member while ensuring that all members of the CPSE/CSE team work together effectively. Exceptional Family Resources presents the workshop Understanding Diploma and Credential Options for Students with Disabilities on Thursday, Nov. 16 from noon to 2 p.m. Parents/guardians and students need to learn the requirements for graduation. A high school diploma is achieved through mastering state academic standards, passing required tests and courses and earning credits. In this training the different requirements for the Regents and Local Diploma will be explained. Discussion will also include how students can use their strengths to achieve a diploma through multiple pathways. Additionally the workshop will explore the importance of career readiness skills and the credentials available. This training will help parents navigate which options are the best for their child. The presenter will be Kristine O'Brien, Parent Outreach Coordinator with SUPAC.
